Tendon transfer surgery is major reconstructive surgery that is often performed after complex hand trauma as a salvage procedure. These injuries are complex and require specialized care and expertise for surgical and therapy management. This course will provide therapy practitioners with an in-depth understanding of the indications and considerations for tendon transfer surgery, common surgical tendon transfer approaches, and preoperative and postoperative treatment strategies based on neuroplasticity, biomechanical, and physiological principles.

The chapter reviews common indications for tendon transfer surgery, such as nerve palsies, central neurological deficits, and major trauma.
2. Common Tendon Transfer Procedures to Restore Muscle Balance in the Hand and Wrist
This chapter describes the range of surgical options for tendon transfers based on the impairment to provide practitioners with the knowledge to develop an individualized treatment plan.
3. Preoperative and Postoperative Management of Tendon Transfer Surgery
This chapter identifies the components of a preoperative plan of care for tendon transfer surgery, including proper positioning, maintaining joint motion, functional orthoses and adaptive devices, and neuromuscular reeducation.
