Dr. Phyllis Palmer is the chair of the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of New Mexico. Her lines of research focus on (a) methodologies to improve clinician education, including her interactive textbook Swallowing Across the Lifespan and the recent development of a swallow disorders data repository; (b) development and implementation of risk associated with aspiration using the proposed BOLUS framework; and (c) improved understanding of the swallowing disorder associated with oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD), a disease with a high incidence in New Mexico.
