Chapters & learning objectives
1. Introduction to Concussion
This opening chapter reviews the epidemiology of concussions and some important points regarding head injuries for the sports physical therapist. It is important to have this background information, as it helps when communicating to athletes, parents, and coaches, who often have many questions generated by many sources.
2. Pathophysiology of Concussion
This second chapter covers the physiology of the injury, laying a basic understanding that can be used daily in practice but also applied to care of the injured athlete. This understanding offers an explanation for why injuries of this nature take time to resolve and makes it easier to explain what to expect and why.
3. Recognition and Management
Chapter 3 covers items that are used for injury recognition and covers the on-field management of the injured athlete. It covers the sideline assessment and return-to-play decisions, which are crucial for sports physical therapists to integrate into their practice.
4. Conclusions
Symptom management of concussion focuses on managing headaches and sleep. This chapter describes the different methods to manage headache symptoms, remove aggravating disturbances that drive symptoms, and manage sleep in an effective manner.
