Individuals with connected tissue pathologies may be more likely to be affected in the gastrointestinal system or the abdominal space. This area can be worked on both manually and therapeutically, with treatment approaches to improve overall presentation and prognosis. Understanding what the individual might be dealing with, considering the risk factors of coexisting conditions in those with connected tissue pathologies, will help guide more precise treatment and create better outcomes.

Learning Objectives
  • Examine an individual’s GI issues with underlying connective tissue disorders and recommend appropriate referrals
  • Analyze the optimal function of the GI system and recognize pathology
  • Distinguish mast cell–related GI manifestations in this population
  • Correlate contributing factors of abnormal mast cell activity to affected GI function
  • Correlate ANS issues with GI presentations in HSD/EDS
  • Determine the functional GI component with ANS dysfunction
  • Determine the presence of compression pathologies within the HSD/EDS individual

Patricia Stott

Patricia Stott treats primarily those with HSD/EDS and those considered highly sensitive patients at her own practice, Elevation Wellness, outside the Denver metro area in Colorado. Also trained in functional and herbal medicine, she works on health and wellness through holistic strategies with these patients, both in person…

Chapters & learning objectives

Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Presentation in HSD/EDS

1. Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Presentation in HSD/EDS

This chapter will review the overall general presentation of gastrointestinal issues that individuals with connected tissue pathology will more likely experience. Differential diagnosis and red flags are also reviewed.

HSD/EDS, MCAS, and the GI System

2. HSD/EDS, MCAS, and the GI System

The role of abnormal mast cell activity within the gastrointestinal system is discussed within this chapter. Abnormal mast cell activity can lead to a variety of gastrointestinal complaints. Understanding if this is present in an individual can help guide more precise treatment.

HSD/EDS, ANS, and the GI System

3. HSD/EDS, ANS, and the GI System

This chapter will review the very important role of the autonomic nervous system in regulating functional mechanics of the gastrointestinal system. Functional gastrointestinal issues can be a challenge for those with connective tissue pathologies. Understanding the role of the ANS will improve prognosis.

Abdominal Vascular Compression Syndromes and Pressure Dysregulation

4. Abdominal Vascular Compression Syndromes and Pressure Dysregulation

Along with an increased risk of gastrointestinal issues, those with connective tissue pathologies appear to be at greater risk for multiple areas of neurovascular compression within the abdominal space. The sooner this is recognized in an individual, the sooner holistic treatment may be applied, producing better outcomes. This chapter reviews a brief look at the understanding of compression pathologies in connective tissue disorders.
