Coaching is not just about asking the right questions—it’s about showing up with the right presence. Listening and Mindset: Applying the Foundations is course 3 of 8 in the Dive Into a Coach Approach® 1.0 | Core Fundamentals course series. This course helps healthcare providers move beyond problem-solving and solution delivery to develop the listening and mindset skills essential to a coaching conversation. Clinicians often default to giving advice, but impactful coaching requires the ability to listen reflectively and cultivate a mindset grounded in curiosity, humility, and partnership. In this course, providers will explore two essential coaching mindsets—the amateur and the discoverer—and learn to recognize and shift away from habits that hinder deep listening. These foundational skills enhance client engagement, support behavior change, and can be applied across diverse settings, including outpatient clinics, schools, home health, and telepractice. This course empowers clinicians to bring more presence and purpose into every client interaction.

Chapters & learning objectives

1. Mastering Listening Actively in Coaching
This chapter explores the core habits that enhance or hinder active listening in coaching. Clinicians will learn how to use paraphrasing, reflective listening, and silence to foster client insight and support aha moments that can lead to meaningful change. Practical techniques and real-world reflection activities guide learners in dialing up their listening presence.

2. Coaching Mindset: The Amateur and the Discoverer
In this chapter, learners are introduced to two foundational coaching mindset metaphors that shape how they show up in conversations. The Amateur mindset invites clinicians to see the client as the expert in their own life, while the Discoverer mindset fosters openness and curiosity. Learners will reflect on personal tendencies, identify when they drift from an optimal mindset, and gain tools to realign for more effective and collaborative coaching.
